Epoxy Grouting vs Standard Grouting: Which Is Right for You?

When it comes time to regrout your tiles, you’ll likely encounter two main options: standard cement-based grout and epoxy grout. Both have their place, but understanding the differences can save you money and headaches down the track.

What Is Standard Cement-Based Grout?

Traditional cement grout is the most commonly used type in New Zealand homes. It’s affordable, widely available, and easy to work with. However, it is porous — meaning it can absorb water, stains, and bacteria over time if not properly sealed.

Standard grout works well for most residential applications, particularly in areas with low moisture exposure, such as kitchen splashbacks and living area floors.

What Is Epoxy Grout?

Epoxy grout is made from epoxy resins and a hardener, making it extremely durable, non-porous, and resistant to stains, chemicals, and moisture. Once cured, it’s virtually impervious to water.

It’s the go-to choice for high-performance environments including:

  • Commercial kitchens and food preparation areas
  • Showers and wet rooms
  • Swimming pool surrounds
  • Areas exposed to harsh cleaning chemicals
  • Any surface prone to heavy staining

Key Differences at a Glance

Stain resistance: Epoxy wins outright. Its non-porous surface means spills wipe clean without penetrating. Moisture resistance: Epoxy is far superior — it won’t absorb water at all. Durability: Epoxy grout can last 30+ years with minimal maintenance. Cement grout typically needs resealing every 1–3 years. Cost: Epoxy grout costs more upfront, both in materials and labour. But its longevity often makes it the better long-term investment. Appearance: Both are available in a wide range of colours. Epoxy maintains its colour better over time. DIY-friendliness: Cement grout is much easier to apply yourself. Epoxy has a shorter working time and requires more skill.

Our Recommendation

For showers, wet areas, and commercial spaces, we recommend epoxy grouting every time. For standard residential floors and walls with normal use, quality cement grout properly sealed offers excellent value.
