What Makes Terracotta and Slate Different?
Both terracotta and slate are natural, porous materials. They don’t have a hard glaze protecting the surface — which means liquids, oils, and cleaning products can penetrate deep into the tile itself rather than sitting on top.
Terracotta is made from fired clay and is extremely absorbent. Slate is a natural stone with a layered structure that can flake or delaminate if treated harshly.
Common Mistakes That Damage These Tiles
- Using acidic cleaners — Vinegar, lemon juice, and many commercial tile cleaners are acidic. On natural stone and terracotta, these can etch the surface permanently and strip sealants.
- Excessive water — Saturating terracotta or slate with water during cleaning can cause the tiles to absorb moisture, leading to staining, efflorescence, or even cracking during temperature changes.
- Leaving them unsealed — Without a proper sealant, these tiles stain almost immediately. Even cooking oil splashed from a nearby bench can leave permanent marks.
- Steam cleaning without preparation — High-pressure steam on unsealed natural stone can drive contaminants deeper into the tile.
The Right Approach to Cleaning
Natural stone tiles should be cleaned with a pH-neutral cleaner specifically formulated for stone. Avoid anything with bleach, ammonia, or acids. Dry the surface after mopping rather than leaving water to sit.
The Importance of Proper Sealing
Terracotta and slate must be sealed — ideally with a penetrating impregnating sealer that soaks into the stone rather than sitting on top. This protects from within without changing the tile’s natural appearance. New tiles should be sealed before use, and the seal should be reapplied every 2–3 years depending on traffic levels.
